This task will give you the opportunity to think deeply about Martin Luther King’s “I Have a Dream” speech as you compare and contrast the transcript with the video of King’s delivery.

Comparing and contrasting these versions will help you prepare for the End-of-Module Task, in which you will make an argument about whether language is most powerful when used to uplift or to control.

Read the transcript of Martin Luther King’s “I Have a Dream” speech. In the space below, explain the message of King’s speech.

Use direct quotations to give two examples of language that is especially inspiring or uplifting. Explain how each example inspires or uplifts.

Take notes on the vocal details you notice (e.g., pausing after specific words, speed, volume, tone) and the image details you notice (e.g., facial expressions, body language, setting, people). Explain how each detail helps King inspire or uplift.
