What is the Preterite

• It is a past tense ("-ed" talked, walked)

• It talks about what happened (in the past)

• It is a completed action

I walked to the store

I bought a jacket

I talked to the lady

To form the preterite of -ar verbs

• Take the stem of the verb (Hablar)

• And add the following endings

Hablar → habl- + endings

Ejemplo (Hablar)

Yo hablé Nosotros hablamos

Tu hablaste Vosotros hablasteis

El/ella/ud habló Ellos hablaron

Notice the accents on "yo" "usted/el/ella" forms

hablé habló

Remember: it's the same stem you used to form the present tense
