Studs

  • Vertical framing members within our walls.

  • Purposes of studs can change (eg. Wall/ king stud vs. Trimmer stud)

  • Lengths of studs may differ depending on the application. (9 ft vs 8 ft ceilings, Trimmer stud vs. cripple stud.)

  • Length, width and height can vary depending on the application. (2"x4", 2"x6") (8 foot are 92 5/8") (9 foot are 104 5/8")

Plates

Plates are horizontal running framing members. Typically we have two top plates (top plate, double top plate), and a bottom plate or a sole plate. Plates are what connect our studs from the top portion of a wall to the bottom portion.

Headders

  • Installed typically over windows and doors

  • The purpose is to divert the weight over windows and doors to the trimmer studs.

  • If there was no headder we most likely would crush our doors and windows
