BACKGROUND

  • Socrates did not write anything. It was Plato who wrote dialogues which has Socrates as a character. Scholars point out that Plato's dialogues can be divided in i) Early dialogues ii) Middle dialogues iii) Later dialogues

  • It is through the early dialogues of Plato, we get to know Socrates

  • Early dialogues: Apology, Charmides, Crito, Euthyphro, Gorgias, Hippias Minor, Ion, Laches, Protagoras and Republic I) and 'transitional' Euthydemus, Hippias Major, Lysis, Menexenus and Meno
