Simple Machines Vocabulary Introduction
Fill in the definitions as you go through the slides on the simple machines vocabulary page. If you dont have access to the page then write them on a sheet of paper.

Simple Machines
Any of several devices with few or no moving parts used to modify motion or amount of force in order to perform work.

Load
The object that is being moved or lifted

Lever
A rod balanced on a fixed point that can help lift a heavy weight with less effort

Pulley
Uses wheels and a rope to raise, lower, or move a load

Wedge
Made of two inclined planes and used to push objects apart

Wheel and Axle
Used to carry loads around easily for long distances with less effort

Inclined Plane
Any slope or ramp that makes it easier to lift something.

Screw
An inclined plane wrapped in a spiral

Work
Work is the amount of force it takes to move an object over a distance.

Mechanical Advantage
The amount of help or advantage gained by using a simple machine

The steepness or gradient of an inclined plane that provides a mechanical advantage.
