Starter activity

Introduce poetic terms:

Stanza, rhyme, rhythm, alliteration, metaphor, simile, assonance

stanza

A group of lines grouped together to divide a poem.

Rhyme

This is when the word at the end of a line has the same last sound as a word at the end of another line

Rhthym

It is the beat and pace of a poem and is created by the pattern of stressed and unstressed syllables.

Aliteration

This is when a series of words begin with the same consonant sound.

For example, she sells shells in the sea shore.

Metaphor

It is a comparison between two things that states one thing is another

Simile

Comparing two thigs using the words 'like' or 'as'.

Assonance

It is the repetition of vowel sounds in nearby words. For example, stranger danger, lean mean, wild child
