About the artwork

  • This image of Tony Blair (the Prime Minister at the time) was featured in an exhibition about modern art and war at a museum.

  • Peter Kennard and Cat Picton-Phillipps worked together to make art in response to the invasion of Iraq.

The artists

  • They describe their work as 'the visual arm of protest'.

  •  Photo Op, depicting Tony Blair taking a ‘selfie’ in front of a huge explosion, was produced in response to the anger they felt at the Government’s decision to go to war in Iraq in 2003, in the face of widespread public protest.

Of course the Prime Minister never posed in front of an explosion to take a selfie. It was faked by the artists.

Why do you think the museum chose it to advertise their exhibition about art and war?
