Reviewing coordinate planes
Mr. Alonzo

2
Objective
5.8(A) describe the key attributes of the coordinate plane, including perpendicular number lines (axes) where the intersection (origin) of the two lines coincides with zero on each number line and the given point (0, 0); the x‐coordinate, the first number in an ordered pair, indicates movement parallel to the x‐axis starting at the origin; and the y‐coordinate, the second number, indicates movement parallel to the y‐axis starting at the origin.
5.8(B) describe the process for graphing ordered pairs of numbers in the first quadrant of the coordinate plane.
5.8(C) graph in the first quadrant of the coordinate plane ordered pairs of numbers arising from mathematical and real‐world problems, including those generated by number patterns or found in an input‐output table.
3
Vocab Words
The horizontal (left-right) number line on the grid is the x-axis.
The vertical number (up-down) line on the grid is the y-axis.
4
Vocab Words
Each point on the coordinate grid can be described by an ordered pair of numbers.
The x-coordinate, the first number in the ordered pair, is the horizontal location, or the distance the point is from 0 in the direction of the x-axis.
The y-coordinate, the second number in the ordered pair, is the vertical location, or the distance the point is from 0 in the direction of the y-axis.
The x-axis and the y-axis intersect at the point (0, 0), called the origin.
5
Find the Ordered Pair
Locate the point for which you want to write an ordered pair
Look below at the x-axis to identify the point’s horizontal distance from 0, which is its x-coordinate.
Look to the left at the y-axis to identify the point’s vertical distance from 0, which is its y-coordinate.
So, the ordered pair for the arena is (3, 2)
6
Multiple Choice
The ordered pair of the aquarium must be?
(4,9)
(9,4)
(9,9)
(4,4)
7
Open Ended
Describe the path you would take to get from the origin to the aquarium, using horizontal, then vertical movements.
8
How to plot a point
Plot the point (5, 7) and label it J.
From the origin, move right 5 units and then up 7 units.
Plot and label the point.
9
Multiple Choice
If you were to plot a point at (8, 0). Starting From the origin, you would move right how many spaces?
8
0

On a seperate sheet of paper make a copy of this Coordinate Grid.
Plot and label point M at (0, 9)
Plot and label point H at (8, 6)
Plot and label point K at (10, 4)
Plot and label point T at (4, 5)

Plot and label point R at (1, 3)
16
Open Ended
Write directions for plotting a point to represent the ordered pair (4, 6).
17
Open Ended
If the y-coordinate for a point is zero, on which axis will the point lie? Explain.
18
Problem Solving with Coordinates
Nathan and his friends are planning a trip to New York City. Use the map for the next three problems. Each unit represents 1 city block.
19
Open Ended
What’s the Error? Nathan says that Madison Square Garden is located at (0, 3) on the map. Is his ordered pair correct? Explain.
20
Open Ended
The Empire State Building is located 5 blocks right and 1 block up from (0, 0). Write the ordered pair for this location.
21
Open Ended
Paulo walks from point B to Bryant Park. Raul walks from point B to Madison Square Garden. If they only walk along the grid lines, who walks farther? Explain.
22
Multiple Choice
Austin has the largest bat colony of any North American city. In the evening, the bats fly out from under the Congress Avenue Bridge. Which ordered pair shows the Congress Avenue Bridge?
