The sun slid behind the mountains, turning the sky into beautiful art. It was yellow, orange, pink, and purple. Finn loved this time of day and couldn't wait for sunset. That had always been one of his favorite things. During summertime, he would picnic on the ranch and enjoy the view with his family. But today the sunset made Finn feel sad. It was his last day on the ranch. In the morning, he and his family would move to the city. He would be starting at a new school. He knew that the sunsets in the city wouldn't be the same, but he would still try to enjoy them with his family.

RL.1.3

I can describe characters in a story and explain how their actions contribute to the sequence of events.

Character traits are words that describe the character "on the inside."

19

Character Traits, Feelings, and Motivations

Characters have traits, or special qualities, such as courage, pride, or honesty. They also have motivations, or reasons why they do something. A character's actions contribute, or add to, the sequence of events in a story. The sequence of events is everything that happens, in the order it happens. Each action changes the story and what happens next.
