Measurement Scales

In order to read a scale, you need to work out what the scale goes up by for each line.

The easiest way to do this is by guessing and checking.

Scale lines often go up by 1, 2, 5 or 10.

Measuring Length

Lengths are measured using a ruler or tape measure. It is important to read the ruler with your eye in line with the reading that you take.

When measurements are read from a different angle, the reading is not accurate. This type of reading is called parallax error.

8

Measuring Volume (liquids)

Liquids are measured using a measuring cylinder. The reading is taken from the middle of the liquid. The line is called the meniscus.

The liquid usually curves up. The reading is taken from the bottom of the meniscus.

Very rarely the meniscus curves down. The reading is taken from the top of the meniscus in this case.
