UNDERSTAND = We understand that in an Argumentative Essay, we are taking a Claim/Position on a debatable topic and must prove our point/claim by providing evidence and elaborating on that evidence in our own words.
BE ABLE TO = We will be able to decide whether social factors or environmental factors had the most impact on the Jamestown settlers. We will provide evidence from the book to prove our claim.

Essential Question: How did the social and environmental factors in the unknown world of Jamestown shape its development and decline?
Meaning did humans or nature affect the growth and/ or failure of Jamestown the most?

Argumentative Essay
An argumentative essay is written with the purpose to take a position/claim on a topic and give several reasons, supported by evidence.
On the backside of Handout 34A, read the Exemplar Argument Essay. If you do not have the workbook for Module 3, a copy of the essay has been uploaded into today's Schoology folder. Identify the Claim, Evidence, and Elaboration as you read. You essay should look similar to this example.

Which factor (social or environmental) did the settlers of Jamestown struggle with the most? Were there more factors caused by humans or nature?
