Comparative forms

What is that?

We use the comparative form of the adjective to compare two things. 

White meat is healthier than red meat. 

Travelling by bus is more comfortable than travelling by train. 

Whan can we use?

• less … than 

• (not) as … as 

• than me / than I am 

• much/a lot/a bit more… 

• any/no more than 

• ... and ...

less ... than

less + adjective + than

Less is the opposite of more. 

Peter is less considerate than Marta. (=Marta is more considerate)

Nowa kanapa jest mniej wygodna od tej starej.

(not) as … as 

(not) as + adjective + as

This house is as beautiful as the old one. (=so the same)

Peter isn’t as friendly as Marta. (=Marta is more friendly)

My sister is taller than me.

Before the comparative (more or -er) we can use much, a lot or a bit. 

He’s a bit taller than me. 

Florence is much more interesting than Pisa. 

This car is a lot more expensive.

any/no more than 

any/no + comparative (any better, no faster, any more expensive)

We use any in negative sentences and no with positive verbs. 

Your performance was no better than mine.  

Your performance wasn’t any better than mine.

We can use the expression more and more, bigger and bigger, worse and worse, etc. to say that something is increasing (rośnie) continuously (czyli musi być +ING przy czasowniku!)

My dog is growing bigger and bigger.

Her hair is getting longer and longer.
