Metamorphic Rock Features

  • Foliation, the appearance of banding such as gneissic banding. Nonfoliated rocks are a single solid color.

  • Rock Cleavage occurs when rocks tend to split or break along a single planar fabric caused by the intense pressure of metamorphism

  • Lineation occurs when minerals within the rock become aligned in the same direction.

6

Metamorphism of Shale

  • Under low-grade metamorphism will become slate

  • Under medium-grade will become phyllite or schist

  • Under high-grade will become gneiss

  • Under High-T/Low-P of contact metamorphism will become Hornfels

7

Nonfoliated Metamorphic Rocks

  • Sandstone will become Quartzite, shown here

  • Limestone will become Marble

  • High-grade metamorphism will create larger crystals giving these a coarse texture.

schist

slate

9

Metamorphism of Igneous Rocks

  • Basalt will become greenstone (shown with veins) or greenschist

  • Rhyolite becomes metarhyolite and then schist

  • Plutonic granite becomes deformed granite or gneiss

Major causes of metamorphism

  • Contact metamorphism, when rock comes into close contact with a heat source such like a magma chamber

  • Regional metamorphism, when stress from tectonic collisions creates large scale metamorphism
