Goal: I can use the most efficient method to solve quadratic equations
2
Poll
Today, we are going to focus on solving quadratics using the three methods below. Which one do you feel most confident using?
Square Roots
Factoring
Quadratic Formula
3
Poll
Which method do you feel least confident using?
Square Roots
Factoring
Quadratic Formula
4
Reviewing Methods of Solving
We will use the next slides to refresh ourselves on each method. Then, we will determine which method is BEST to use.
5
Taking Square Roots
ax2 + c = 0 or ax2 = c The equation is missing its "bx" term.
Isolate the x2 term
Take the square root of both sides
Don't forget the +/-
6
Square Root Example
7
Multiple Choice
Solve by finding square roots and simplify completely:
x2−16=0
x=±16
x=4
x=±4
No real solutions
8
Multiple Choice
Solve by finding square roots and simplify completely:
9k2 = 225
x = 4
x=±25
x=±5
9
Factoring
ax2 +bx +c=0
Must be in standard form and equal zero
If c term is missing ( ax2+bx ) , factor GCF
After factoring, set both factors equal to zero and solve for x.
10
Factoring Using GCF Example
11
Multiple Choice
Solve by factoring the GCF
10x2−8x=0 x=2; x=−45
x=2; x=45
x=0 ; x=54
x=0; x=−54
12
Factoring Trinomial Example
13
Multiple Choice
Solve by factoring:
x2+10x+24=0
x=6 or x=4
x=±14
x=−6 or x=−4
No real solutions
14
Quadratic Formula
Must be in standard form and set equal to zero
Used when the equation is NOT factorable
ALL equations can be solved using the quadratic formula
15
Quadratic Formula Example
16
Multiple Choice
Use the quadratic formula to find the solutions for
2x2 - 9x + 5 = 0
x = -8.14 and x= 6.14
x = -4.07 and x= 3.07
x = 3.85 and x = 0.65
ZERO solutions
17
Which method should I use?
Certain equations can be solved using multiple methods. Others can only be solved one way.
18
19
