Today, we are going to focus on solving quadratics using the three methods below. Which one do you feel most confident using?

Square Roots

Factoring

Quadratic Formula

3

Which method do you feel least confident using?

Square Roots

Factoring

Quadratic Formula

4

Reviewing Methods of Solving

We will use the next slides to refresh ourselves on each method. Then, we will determine which method is BEST to use.

5

Taking Square Roots

  •  ax2 + c = 0ax^{2\ }+\ c\ =\ 0  or  ax2 = cax^{2\ }=\ c  The equation is missing its "bx" term.

  • Isolate the  x2 x^{2\ }  term

  • Take the square root of both sides

  • Don't forget the +/-

6

Square Root Example

7

Multiple Choice

Solve by finding square roots and simplify completely:
 x216=0x^2-16=0

1

 x=±16x=\pm16

2

 x=4x=4

3

 x=±4x=\pm4

4

No real solutions

8

Multiple Choice

Solve by finding square roots and simplify completely:

9k2 = 225

1

x = 4

2

x=±4x=\pm4

3

x=±25x=\pm25

4

x=±5x=\pm5

9

Factoring

  •  ax2 +bx +c=0ax^{2\ }+bx\ +c=0

  • Must be in standard form and equal zero

  • If c term is missing ( ax2+bxax^2+bx  ) , factor GCF

  • After factoring, set both factors equal to zero and solve for x.

10

Factoring Using GCF Example

11

Multiple Choice

Solve by factoring the GCF

 10x28x=010x^2-8x=0

1

 x=2; x=54x=2;\ x=-\frac{5}{4}

2

 x=2; x=54x=2;\ x=\frac{5}{4}

3

 x=0 ; x=45x=0\ ;\ x=\frac{4}{5}

4

 x=0; x=45x=0;\ x=-\frac{4}{5}

12

Factoring Trinomial Example

13

Multiple Choice

Solve by factoring:
 x2+10x+24=0x^2+10x+24=0

1

 x=6 or x=4x=6\ or\ x=4

2

 x=±14x=\pm\sqrt{14}

3

 x=6 or x=4x=-6\ or\ x=-4

4

No real solutions

14

Quadratic Formula

  • Must be in standard form and set equal to zero

  • Used when the equation is NOT factorable

  • ALL equations can be solved using the quadratic formula
