2

Objective

  • Explore the function of Ribosome

  • Describe the function of the cell

  • Study protein synthesis

  • And distinguish between RNA and DNA

3

What are Ribosomes?

Ribosomes are like tiny factories in the cell. They make proteins that perform all sorts of functions for the cell's operation.

Ribosomes can be found in the cytoplasm or attached to a membrane.

5

Ribosomes purpose

  • The main job of the ribosome is to make proteins for the cell.

  • There can be hundreds of proteins that need to be made for the cell, so the ribosome needs specific instructions on how to make each protein

  • These instructions come from the nucleus in the form of messenger RNA

6

Open Ended

What is the main function of ribosome ?

8

Ribosome Structure

  • The ribosome has two main components called the large subunit and the small subunit.

  • These two units come together when the ribosome is ready to make a new protein

  • Both of the sub-units consist of strands of RNA and various proteins.

12

RNA

  • RNA is an acronym for ribonucleic acid

  • RNA

13

RNA

  • DNA is the blueprint of the cell RNA is an exact copy

  • RNA stands for ribonucleic acid

  • When the cell needs certain protein it activates a gene that copies multiple copies of DNA to create messenger mRNA or mRNA
