This is my idea of fun. Human Geography made news again today.

Culture: what is the deepest parts of ourselves?

Family is at the deepest level.

What did we look at last week?

• what is family; who is in my family

• the idea of family is not the same for all people

So, this happened today.

• The city of Saint Paul changed its definition of family.

• Family used to be mother, father, children. That changed yesterday.

The change in the language is in response to the change in our culture.

How has the idea of family changed in Saint Paul?

• Some people create their own families now; live with friends and not parents

• People from "ethnic" communities have MUCH BIGGER idea of who is in a family.

In SPPS, English is spoken at home by the most number of students. Hmong is #2. The graph below shows the top 5 percentages of students who speak languages at home other than English. (ethnic, as the newspaper article says) Which of the below is true?

• Some of these language/ethnic groups have a bigger idea of family than "typical".

• In Hmong culture many people live together in one house: grandparents, parents, children and wives of any of the sons in that family.

• Saint Paul housing definition of family now matches more of the people who live in Saint Paul.
