Unit 5 Reading 1: Why do we protect animals?

threat (n.)

 a statement in which you tell someone that you will cause them harm or trouble if they do not do what you want

-Global warming poses a serious threat for the future.

-Your threats don't scare me.

environment (n.)

the air, water, and land on Earth, which is affected by man's activities

-Some of these chemicals are very damaging to the environment.

- I didn't feel that the neighborhood was a very safe environment for kids

captivity (n.)

when a person or animal is kept in a prison, cage etc and not allowed to go where they want

-The hostages were released from captivity.

-Both these birds escaped from captivity.

something that is missing is not in its usual place, so that you cannot find it

-We found the missing piece of the jigsaw under the chair.

release (v.)

 to let someone go free, after having kept them somewhere

- The turtles will be released back into the sea.

mammal (n.)

a type of animal that drinks milk from its mother's body when it is young. Humans, dogs, and whales are mammals.

-More than 100 bird species and 35 mammal species have been identified at the park.

sanctuary (n.)

an area for birds or animals where they are protected and cannot be hunted

-This island is maintained as a sanctuary for endangered species.
