Talking about experiences

When we talk about our experiences in life, we can do it by using the present perfect


I have gone parachuting.

I have lived in the US .

She has met Anne Hathaway.

We have swum with sharks.

They have travelled by plane many times

To use these tense it is important to remember that you have to use the past participle form of the verbs, let's see how well you know regular and irregular verbs.

Never and ever

When we are talking about experiences we can ask a person if the have done somethingat least one time in their life by using the word ever:


Have you ever travelled abroad?


If we haven't done it in our live we can respond using never.


I have never travelled abroad.


Notice the position of the two words in the sentences.

Present Perfect or Past Simple

We use the past simple to talk about an experience at a specific time in the past.


I went to Australia in 2001.


We use present perfect to talk about an experience without mentioning when it happened.


I have been to Australia.

When we are talking about experiences we commonly start using the present perfect and to give details we use the past simple:


A: Have you ever swum with sharks?

B: Yes, I have. It was in Cancún in 2017, I touched it and took a photograph with it. Have you ever done it?

A: No I haven't. But I would like to one day.
