2

Comparative Reading Standards:

ELAGSE6RL9: Compare and contrast texts in different forms or genres (e.g., stories and poems; historical novels and fantasy stories) in terms of their approaches to similar themes and topics.

ELAGSE6RI9: Compare and contrast one author’s presentation of events with that of another (e.g., a memoir written by and a biography on the same person).

3

"I Can" Statements:

  • I can compare and contrast texts in terms of their approaches to similar themes, topics, and text structure.

4

Classifying:

When you classify things, you see how they are the same. Then you put them into groups based on how they are alike. When you read a text, there are many things that can be grouped together. You might break down the text into parts. You might put facts in one group. You might put opinions in another. You might put questions in one group. You might put answers in another.

Sometimes you are asked to read two or more texts. How could you classify them? You might group the texts based on how they are written. You might put personal letters in one group. You might put speeches in another. Or, you might group them by their topics. You might put texts about health in one group. You might put texts about history in another.

5

Open Ended

What are some ways you can classify, or group, two or more texts? List two ways or examples.

6

► Read these two paragraphs about colors:

Colors can make you feel a certain way. While you’re at the store, take a look at the sports drinks. Why do you think they come in such bright colors? Colors like neon blue are high-energy. This might make people think that the drinks will help them run faster or jump higher.

On the other hand, soft colors can make us feel quiet. Babies’ rooms are often painted in shades of soft colors, like light blue or pale green. These colors are calming. And if you have ever spent time with a baby, you know how important that is!

Let’s classify these. How are they the same? Both have information about colors. Both explain how different colors can make people feel a certain way.

7

► Then suppose you were asked to finish this sentence:

Both paragraphs explain how colors can affect people. Both can best be classified as paragraphs that

A. show two sides of an argument.

B. give information.

C. describe a dangerous science experiment.

D. list problems.

Think back to the notes above. Both paragraphs have information about colors. It looks like answer B -- “give information” -- is the best choice. But let’s look at the other answer choices to be sure. Do the paragraphs show two sides of an argument (answer choice A)? No, they do not. Do they describe a dangerous experiment (answer choice C)? Also, no. Do they list problems (answer choice D)? No. If anything, the second paragraph helps to fix a problem. A room with a pale color can help to keep a fussy or cranky baby calm.

Fast food is fast! You can get food in almost no time. How? Some food is ready before you get there. The food is kept warm. It sits under hot lights. When you order your meal, the food is right there. Even if you order a large meal, you get it in just a minute or two.

Fast food is not good for your body. Why? Most of it has too much salt. It also has too much fat. These can hurt your body. Eating too much of these can make you sick.

How is a map helpful? You can find cities and countries on a map. You can find roads too. Oceans and lakes can be seen on maps. So can mountains and deserts. Some things found on maps have been there a long time. Most mountains and lakes are old. Other things may be new. When a new road is built, it has to be added to a map.
