8.L.5 Review

2
Photosynthesis versus Cellular Respiration
Photosynthesis is the process of using light energy to make food energy. This is done by producers such as plants and phytoplankton. It uses carbon dioxide, water and sunlight and makes food and oxygen.
Cellular respiration is the process of breaking down food for cellular energy. It uses sugar and oxygen and creates energy and carbon dioxide.
3
Metabolism
Metabolism is the set of chemical reactions involved in storing fuel (food) molecules and converting fuel (food) molecules into energy.
In order for the body to use the fuel energy stored in food, the food must first be digested and combined with oxygen (oxidized).
4
three factors contribute to the overall metabolic rate of the body.
The Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) accounts for about 60% of all energy used by the body
Daily physical activities such as walking and moving around account for another 30% of the energy used by the body.
10% of the energy used by the body is used to digest and process (oxidize) food.
5
Multiple Select
What do producers need for photosynthesis?
sunlight
carbon dioxide
oxygen
water
6
Multiple Choice
Why are digestion and respiration important to the body?
They control the production of hormones in the body.
They build muscle and bone that the body needs.
They store food for the body
They help provide the energy needed for body functions.
7
Multiple Choice
How are plant cells and human cells different?
Human cells need food, but plant cells do not.
Human cells need energy, but plant cells do not.
Plant cells make their own food, but human cells do not.
Plant cells make their own energy, but human cells do not.
8
The 3 macronutrients
proteins- Help to grow and repair muscle tissue.
carbohydrates- Used for the bodies MAIN source of energy.
fats- Used to store energy.

Multiple Choice
How does food provide energy?
Food contains oxygen which cells convert into energy.
Food contains fiber which breaks down quickly into energy.
Food contains water which is used to store energy for later use.
Food contains sugar which is converted into energy through cellular respiration
21
Multiple Choice
Which best explains why organisms need food?
Food is the source of energy required for growth and repair of tissues.
