The French and Indian War

  • The French and Indian War, also called the Seven Years War by the English, was part of a major struggle between the British and the French.

  • It ended with the British winning. However, the French and Indian War was also very expensive and contributed to the conflict between the British and their American colonies.

  • The French and Indian War left Britain with pressing financial (money) problems

  • Because of the debt, the British needed money to pay for their expense. So the British started taxing the colonies

The Sugar Act, also known as the American Revenue Act, was a tax that made colonists pay a tax on things like sugar and molasses. This first tax made colonists angry, they were not represented or asked how they felt about the taxes, over in Britain.

Stamp Act of 1765

The Stamp Act was a tax that made colonists pay a tax on things like newspapers, legal documents, stamps and other paper goods. This tax made colonists angrier about being taxed, they were not represented or asked how they felt about the taxes, over in Britain. Because of this, and the other taxes, the colonists started with the phrase "No Taxation Without Representation!".
