Fractions are division problems

  •  55\frac{5}{5}  = 5 ÷\div  5 = 1

  •  71\frac{7}{1}  is the same as 7 ÷\div  1 = 7

Comparing fractions with the same numerator

  • When 2 fractions have the same numerator, the fraction with the bigger denominator is SMALLER

  •  14\frac{1}{4}  is smaller than  12\frac{1}{2}

10

 12\frac{1}{2}  is bigger than  14\frac{1}{4}

Look at the WHITE, UNSHADED part. When the circle is divided in  12\frac{1}{2}  , the two pieces are larger than the pieces that are in an identical circle that is divided into 4 pieces, representing  14\frac{1}{4}  .

Comparing fractions with the same denominator.

  • If both of the fractions have the same denominator, then they are divided into the same number of pieces.

  • Look at the numerator to determine which is larger.

17

Identical denominators

Both of the shapes are cut into the same number of pieces - 5.

If the criteria is which one has more pieces that are shaded blue, then to compare, we simply count how many are shaded blue in each pentagon.

Identical denominators

 45\frac{4}{5}   >>   35\frac{3}{5}

The first has 4 and the second has 3 shaded so the first one is larger. (Has a larger area that is shaded blue.)
