Quantity and Quality of a Chemical Formula

  • Quality: The elements that make up the compound.

  • Quantity- The amount of atoms that are presents for each element within the compound.

  • EXAMPLE: CO2

  • Quality: Carbon and Oxygen

  • Quantity: 1 atom of Carbon and 2 atoms of Oxygen

TYPES OF CHEMICAL FORMULAS:

  • Empirical Formula- The smallest whole number ratio in which elements can combine to form a bond. Subscripts are in simplest form and cannot be reduced any further.

    Examples-  CO2,  CH4, NaCl,

  • Molecular Formula- Covalent Compounds form molecules, In some cases the molecular and empirical formulas are the same, for example H2O. Examples- C2H6, HF, CO, CO2

  •  Structural Formula- Shows how the elements in the compound are bonded. (The shape that the compound will take, based on the way the elements are bonding.
