Checks and Balances
The system of separate branches of government given different powers that allows each branch to watch over the others; keeping any one branch from becoming too powerful or misusing its authority.

An alliance that works to reach common goals.

Popular Sovereignty
The people are the source of the government's authority because they vote their representatives into office.

Democracy
Form of government in which the people rule and are free to make choices about their lives and government.

Public Agenda
What people want from the government at any given time. (Also known as a - Popular Mandate)

Suffrage
The right to vote. Women did not get the right to vote until 1920 {19th Amendment} and 18-20 year-olds got the right in 1971 {26th Amendment.}

Civic Virtue
Personal qualities that add to a healthy democracy. Examples - Individuals: obeying laws, serving on juries, paying taxes, males register for selective service and voting in elections.

Naturalization
Process that allows an immigrant to the US to become a legal citizen. Must be 18 years old, and have lived in the US for 5 years, or 3 years if they are married to a US citizen. Must pass a test on US Government and History, write and speak English, and take an oath promising allegiance to the US.
