1) Undo any addition or subtraction
2) Undo any multiplication or division

Example 1:  $5\ =\ \frac{x}{-2}+7$  

Special Case of two step equations:

If the entire variable side is multiplied or divided undo multiplication or division first and then adding or subtracting.

Example 2: 3(2x – 7) = 3

Example 3:  $-3=\frac{5x+1}{-2}$
