Organisms and their Needs

Slide image

2

Lesson goals

  • To understand the needs that all living things have

  • To be able to describe how organisms survive while seeking out their needs.

3

State Standards

  • 6.LS.1 Investigate and describe how homeostasis is maintained as living things seek out their basic needs of food, water, shelter, space, and air

4

Everything is connected

  • In the forest all things affect the things around them.

  • In nature, no organism survives on its own.

  • All living things depend on other living and nonliving things to survive.

5

Open Ended

What are the 4 needs that all organisms need to survive?

6

Survival Challenges

  • Whether it's a bacteria, a flower, or a tiger, all species must do 3 things to survive

  • Get and use energy

  • Reproduce

  • Maintain their structure

7

4 Needs for Earth Life

  • Oxygen or Carbon Dioxide

  • Water

  • Food

  • the right environment/shelter/temperature and space.

8

Poll

Is Fire a living thing?

Yes

No

9

Oxygen and Carbon Dioxide

  • Cells need oxygen for the many chemical reactions in them

  • Animals breath oxygen

  • Fish getoxygen from water

  • Trees need carbon dioxide to make glucose

  • Some organisms need other gasses

Slide image

10

Water

  • On our planet all organisms need water, all the way down to their cells.

  • Plants absorb water through their roots

  • Animals dring water

  • Bacteria allow water to pass through their cell membranes

Slide image

11

Food

  • All creatures need food for energy and nutrients

  • Food also provides vitamins and minerals needed for our bodies to work.

  • Iron, for instance, is needed to build red blood cells that carry oxygen to our cells.

12

Environment

  • Why don't polar bears live in the desert?

  • All organisms have adaptations that make them suited for a particular environment

  • They must live in a place with the conditions that allows them to survive.

Slide image

13

Climate

  • Climates and temperatures vary across our planet

  • Organisms usually have adaptations for a particular climate

  • Penguins are adapted to very cold climates

  • Many lizards are only adapted to relatively warm climates.

Slide image

14

Shelter

  • Shelter helps many animals survive

  • It provides for temperature control

  • It also provides protection

  • Anything that protects creatures from severe weather is a shelter

Slide image

15

Space

  • Not that kind of space

Slide image

16

Space

  • All organisms need a certain amount and kind of space to survive.

  • If too many animals live in an area, they will start to run out of food.

  • A single African Elephant can eat 330 lbs of vegetation in one day and drink 55 gallons of water!
