  • Hints that are given by the author that help you define a word

  • You must use context and prior knowledge to determine meaning of word

  • Strategy helps you when determining unknown words which leads to greater comprehension of the text

  • Will be a useful strategy for questions asked on SAT

How do I use this strategy?

  • Read the sentence to yourself.

  • Think about the unknown/target word. Ask yourself, have I heard this word before?

  • Think about the other words in the sentence. Look for clues in the sentence that might hint at the meaning of the word.

  • Example: 

    The city council concurred with the excellent recommendations of the library committee.
