A simple sentence has one subject and one verb or predicate.
Example:
The cat stretched.
Kelly twirled in circles.

A compound sentence is a sentence with at least two independent clauses.
An independent clause (unlike a dependent clause) can stand alone as a sentence.
Example:
Mary went to work. John went to the party. I went home. →
Mary went to work, but John went to the party, and I went home.

There are seven coordinating conjunctions which are used to link independent clauses.
