2

exponents

exponents are the little numbers or letters above a letter or number, as in  ax or 34a^x\ or\ 3^4

3

exponents are the number of times you multiply the base by, as in

 34=(3)(3)(3)(3)3^4=\left(3\right)\left(3\right)\left(3\right)\left(3\right)  OR  x3=x×x×x=(x)(x)(x)x^3=x\times x\times x=\left(x\right)\left(x\right)\left(x\right)

4

parentheses are grouping symbols

everything inside the parentheses is worked on together, not by stuff outside of the parentheses.

(2+4+3)=9      (2*4+3)=(8+3)=11

5

remember PEMDAS OR GEMDAS

Parentheses, then exponents, then multiplication or division, (whichever is 1st) the addition and subtraction (whichever is 1st) or

Grouping, then exponents, then multiplication or division, (whichever is 1st) the addition and subtraction (whichever is 1st)

6

order of operations

3+4*2 = 3+8=11 since you multiply before you add

3*4+2 = 12+2=14 since you multiply before you add

7

Multiple Choice

so what is 3+4+2*5

1

9*5=45

2

7+10=17

3

12*10=120

8

 3+4×10÷2=3+4\times10\div2=

left to right multiply first ( before you add) and get
3+40 divided by 2= 3+40÷23+40\div2  divide before you add,
then 3+203+20  =23

9

find the value

 20÷4+17×(9−6)20\div4+17\times\left(9-6\right)  =
 20÷4+17×(3)20\div4+17\times\left(3\right)
 5+17×35+17\times3
 5+515+51
56

10

 3×62+43\times6^2+4

pemdas 1st exponents,  3×36+43\times36+4
then multiply  108+4108+4
=112

11

 3+42+(6−3)2÷93+4^2+\left(6-3\right)^2\div9

P(arentheses )  3+42−32÷93+4^2-3^2\div9
exponents  3+16−9÷93+16-9\div9
division  3+16−13+16-1
then add subtract 3+16=19 and 19-1=18
