Density

Density is the measurement of mass per volume.

 D=mVD=\frac{m}{V}

 m=DVm=DV

 V=mDV=\frac{m}{D}

4

An object has a mass of 62 g. It is in the shape of s rectangular prism with dimensions of 4 cm by 2.5 cm by 2 cm. What is the density of the object?

  • Calculate the volume: V = lwh

  • V = (4)(2.5)(2) = 20 cubic cm

  • m = 62 g

  •  D=mV=6220=3.1gcm3D=\frac{m}{V}=\frac{62}{20}=3.1\frac{g}{cm^3}

Multiple Choice

Jack has a rock. The rock has a mass of 14g and a volume of 2cm3. What is the density of the rock?
1
7 mL
2
7 g/cm3
3
28 g/cm3
4
1/7 g/cm3

6

The density of a diamond is 3.52 g/cubic cm. If the volume of the diamond is 0.2 cubic cm, what is the mass of the diamond?

  • D = 3.52 V= 2

  •  m=DVm=DV

  •  m=(3.52)(0.2)= 0.704 gm=\left(3.52\right)\left(0.2\right)=\ 0.704\ g

7
