A nervous handler (a) or rider (b) may cause the horse to become more fearful. In this study, volunteers were asked to ride/lead their horse around an arena 4 times (Keeling et al, 2009).

But - riders/handlers were told that an umbrella would suddenly appear from behind a barrier. The humans anticipated this but nothing actually happened.
