Past Simple
We use for an action which happened at a stated time in the past
Example:
Peter bought a new CD last week.

We use the past simple for:
an action that started and finished in the past
Example:
Sue had the flu two weeks ago.
(She hasn't got the flu anymore )

We use the present Perfect for:
an action which happened at an unstated time in the past

(When? We don't know. The time is not stated.)
