History

The Greek revolution against the Ottoman Empire started in 1821 . The symbolic date of 25th March was the chosen date for the beginning of the war as this is also the date of the religious celebration of the Annunciation. The war lasted for almost 9 years

The timeline

After the great victory of Kolokotronis at Dervenakia, many battles took place all aroung Greece

The first capital of the newborn country of Greece was Nafplio

The first governor of this new country was Ioannis Kapodistrias

The Northern part of Greece , Macedonia, was not yet part of the country

The Flag

the flag of Greece consists of 9 horizontal stripes representing the phrase "Eleftheria y Thanatos" which means: Freedom or Death

The White cross on the top left corner stands for the Christian Religion of the Nation.

Today

Today, Greeks all around the world celebrate their Independence Day on the 25th March every year by holding military parades but also student parades.

Churches, public buildings and houses are decorated with the Greek flag.

The traditional food is cod fiah with garlic sauce
