Part 1 - Definitions

In this section you will be asked to choose the correct word based off the definition provided

Multiple Choice

Example Question:

to strengthen or support (an object or substance), especially with additional material.

• reinforce

• outcome

• promotion

Notice the "to" at the beginning of the definition - this tells us that the word we are looking for is a verb

This can help you eliminate words that aren't actions (verbs)

Multiple Choice

Example Question:

the ability to understand something immediately, without the need for conscious reasoning.

• intuition

• detach

• mentally

Notice the article "the" at the beginning of the definition - this tells us that the word we are looking for is a noun

Definitionst that begin with articles such as "a", "an", or "the" usually are nouns

Part 2 - Fill in the Blank

In this part you will be given a sentence and asked to fill in the word that is missing

Multiple Choice

Example Question:

Sleep is _______ to our well-being and our performance.

• crucial

• income

• contrary

Crucial means important. Sleep is important.

Context is key to answering these questions.

Multiple Choice

Example Question:

People _______ to make big moves like moving to another country because they believe there are many risks.

• hesitate

• stranded

• issue

To hesitate means to pause or delay. People may delay a big decision.

Hesitate is also a verb - think of structure to help elimnate words like "issue" which is a noun

Part 3 - Sentence Comprehension

In this part you are given the word in a sentence - you then have to choose the correct meaning for the bolded and underlined word

Multiple Choice

Example Question:

A remarkable thing about dolphins is that they can figure out how to use complex tools like keyboards to communicate.

What does remarkable mean?

• unintelligent

• extraordinary

• fast

Remarkable means extraordinary. It's extraordinary how smart dolphins are!

Multiple Choice

Example Question:

To be loved, healthy, and live a full life are natrual human aspirations.

What does aspirations mean?

• desires

• recipes

• decline

Aspirations are desires, things that you really want to accomplish.

You probably have aspirations to get a good grade on the test :)

Part 4 - Sentence Creation

This part you will be given a list of words to choose from and asked to create original sentences

Open Ended

Example Question:

Create an original sentence using one of the following words:

- utilize - stranded - medical - conduct

Open Ended

Example Question:

Create an original sentence using one of the following words:

- isolated - mentally - legal - remove

A key for creating sentences is to make sure you know the word's meaning and part of speech.

Keep your sentences simple - don't overthink it! 

Part 5 - Reading Comprehension

In this section you will be given a short reading - this will be followed by different types of comprehension questions

Open Ended

Example Question:

NASA has been working on a big new rocket for a return to the moon ever since the agency retired its space shuttles in 2011. Critics say it is way behind schedule and won't fly often enough to justify its costs; they argue that rockets from commercial spaceflight companies could do the job more cheaply.

What are the issues with NASA's big new rocket?

The issues are that it's behind schedule (taking too long) and costs too much money.

Reading carefully helps in this seciton.

Here are the list of words that may be on the test :)

Unit 4 - aspiration, outcome, promote

Unit 5 - hesitate, mentally, income

Unit 6 - concious, logically, decline

Unit 9 - remarkable, contrary, integrate

Unit 10 - stranded, detach, conduct
