Algebra is solving for an unknown number (variable)

• If you have an equation with a number missing how do you find the missing number?

• Today we will learn how to solve for the missing number in an addition problem

Example: _ + 1 = 2

• Because it is an addition problem, we will do the opposite to solve for the missing number.

• The opposite of addition is subtraction

• Step 1: Subtract the smaller number (1) from the larger number (2)

• 2 - 1 = 1

• Step 2: Plug in the missing number to the equation

• 1 + 1 = 2
