IF CONDITIONAL

Conditional sentences are statements discussing known factors or hypothetical situations and their consequences.

Complete conditional sentences contain

a conditional clause (often referred to as the if-clause) the consequence. 

ZERO TYPE

If + S +V1, simple present tense

Fact or real situation

Example :

If we heat the water, it boils.

If it is rain, it is wet

FIRST TYPE

If + S +V1, WILL +V1

Possible situation in the present or future

Example :

If it rains, I will not come to your house

If he comes to town, we will have dinner

SECOND TYPE

If + S +V2, S+ WOULD +V1

Unreal situation / impossible situation in the present or future.

Example :

If I were a president, I would lower taxes

If they had more money, they would buy a villa

THIRD TYPE

If + S + had + V3, S+ would+have+V3

Something didn’t happen

Example :

If Jane had stayed in Boston, she would have found a new job

If he had known that, he would have decided differently
