Hurricanes Formation

  •  As ocean water warms, some of this water evaporates and transfers thermal energy into the atmosphere.

  • The water vapor then cools and condenses to form clouds. The increase in water vapor raises the humidity, and the transfer of thermal energy raises the temperature.

3

Hurricanes

  • Hurricanes are large, tropical weather systems with an extremely low barometric pressure (air pressure), heavy rains, and high wind speeds.

4

Air Masses

  • Air Massess

  • Large bodies of air

  • Similiar Temperature and Moisture

  • Temperature= Hot or Cold

  • Moisture= Dry or Humid

Formation of Thunderstorms

  • Thunderstorms typically form near cold fronts

  • They are also happen more frequently near the Equator

  • This is because the cold air mass comes and pushes up the warm air mass. When the warm air rises, it cools, condenses, and forms clouds.

8

Multiple Choice

Why do cities near the ocean (Like Miami) get so thunderstorms?

1

Uneven heating of earth creates lots of fronts that form thunderstorms

2

The warm fronts that form only over tropical areas cause

thunderstorms.

3

The amount of sunshine received by coastal areas causes

thunderstorms.

9

Multiple Choice

Tornadoes form when

1

Two fronts diverge

2

Two fronts transform

3

Two fronts fronts converge

10

Multiple Choice

How do we characterize an air mass that forms over Water?

1

Dry

2

Wet

3

Warm

4

Cold

11

Multiple Choice

Hurricanes typically happen MOST in July, August, & September. Why is this true?

1

This is when ocean water is warmest which hurricanes need to form

2

This is when ocean water is coldest which tornadoes need to be created

12

Multiple Choice

High pressure will usually bring what kind of weather?

1

Clear & Dry

2

Cloudy & Stormy

13

Multiple Choice

How do we characterize an air mass that forms over near the equator?

1

Wet

2

Dry

3

Cold

4

14

Multiple Choice

Cold fronts typically bring in what kind of weather?

1

Cooler temperatures and snow

2

Warmer temperatures and storms

3

Cooler temperatures and storms

4

Sunny days and wind

15

Multiple Choice

Hurricanes form when low pressure is in the air. What else does a hurricane need to form???

1

Warm, ocean water usually found near the poles

2

Cold, pool water always found on land

3

Warm, ocean water usually found near the equator

4
