Adding and subtracting general algebraic expressions

  • Add 3x + 11 and 7x – 5 The sum = 3x + 11 + 7x – 5 5

  • Now, we know that the terms 3x and 7x are like terms and so also are 11 and – 5.

  • Further 3x + 7x = 10 x and 11 + (– 5) = 6.

  • The sum = 3x + 11 + 7x – 5 

  • = 3x + 7x + 11 – 5

  • 10x + 6

  • Hence, 3x + 11 + 7x – 5 = = 10x + 6
