Where do we shop?

  • We all shop to buy things to feed ourselves and live our lives.

  • Shopping for some of us is a leisure activity.

  • Shopping is a big business. It creates employment and generates a lot of income for the country.

  • Smaller settlements have fewer shops and larger settlements have several shopping centres. Some are built out-of-town too.

  • Where people choose to shop depends on what they want to buy and how often they need that product.

6

Different types of shopping

  • Corner store- This would be used for buying the ‘odd’ item. eg: Bread, milk etc.

  • Supermarket- This would be used for buying larger quantities . You would buy a lot of different items at one time.

  • Out of town shopping- This would be a big shopping centre Eg: Brookfields, Coimbatore. This would often be a day out for people.

  • Internet shopping- Internet shopping can go from buying an odd item like a book or cd to a big weekly shop.

Convenience goods

**Some goods such as food and newspapers don't cost very much and may be needed every day. We are happy to buy them in the nearest convenient place.

**These are called convenience or low order goods.

**They may be bought at the local corner shop, near shopping centre or supermarket.

Comparison goods

  • **Some goods like clothes and furniture are much more expensive. We buy them less often and like to compare styles and prices before we buy.

**These are called comparison or high order goods.
