When the noun is more than one, we pluralize the noun.

We follow certain rules when forming the plural form of nouns.

Rule #1: Most nouns form their plural by adding an -s at the end of the word.

Example: students, books, schools, games

Rule #2: Nouns ending in -s, -sh, -ch, -x, and -z, form their plural by adding es. (For nouns ending in -z, double the letter before adding -es)

Examples: quizzes, taxes, boxes, churches, wishes

Rule #3a: For nouns ending in -y, if there's a vowel before the y, add -s.

Examples: bays, birthdays, essays, monkeys

Rule #3b: For nouns ending in -y, if there's a consonant before the y, change -y to -i then add -es.

Examples: babies, ladies, butterflies, memories

Rule #4a: For nouns ending in -f, form their plural by changing -f to -v before adding -es.

Examples: loaves, knives, wives, lives

Rule #4b: Some nouns ending in -f, form their plural by adding -es.

Examples: beliefs, proofs, chiefs, roofs

Rule #5a: For nouns ending in -o, if there's a vowel before the -o add -s.

Examples: radios, zoos, studios

Rule #5b: For nouns ending in -o, if there's a consonant before the -o add -es.

Examples: heroes, echoes, volcanoes

Rule #6a: Some nouns do not change when they are pluralized.

Examples: fish, information, homework, sheep, deer, salmon, trout

Rule #6b: Some nouns are used only in the plural form.

Examples: pants, scissors, shorts, tongs, goggles, earphones, jeans

Rule #6c: Some nouns are plural in form but singular in meaning. These nouns do no have plural forms.

Examples: politics, mathematics, news, civics, measles, mumps, colds, economics

Rule #7: Some nouns change their spelling when pluralized.

Examples: tooth - teeth, foot - feet, person - people, man - men, woman - women, child - children
