7.2 Grammar Point 1: Estar, Sentirse, & Tener

SER - to be

We have used ser to tell what people/things are normally like:

Mi amigo es joven. (used ser - My friend is young.)

ESTAR (to be) is used with adjectives to describe mental or physical conditions.

• Está muy cansado.

• (Used estar - He is very tired.)

SENTIRSE - to feel

e --> ie stem changing, REFLEXIVE verb

Like estar, sentirse can be used with mental or physical states.

Por ejemplo:

• Se siente muy cansado. He feels very tired.

• No se sienten bien. They don't feel well.

Estar and sentirse are

INTERCHANGEABLE!

estar OR sentirse can be used with:

• aburrido(a)

• cansado(a)

• contento(a)

• enfermo(a)

• enojado(a)

• nervioso(a)

• triste

Please notice:

the adjectives used with estar and sentirse MUST agree in number and gender!
