Parts of speech refer to the functions of a word in a sentence.
There are 8 general classifications for words.
They are:

Nouns
Nouns are people, places, things, ideas.
There are two (2) types of nouns: PROPER and COMMON
Nouns can be found all over the sentences, but many times they are subjects of sentence.
Anything you can see is a noun. Look at the room and name a few things you can see.

Proper Nouns
Proper nouns are ALWAYS capitalized because they are the names of peaople, places, and things.

Singular Noun
A singular noun is a noun that refers to only one person, one place, one thing, or one idea.
Ex:

It is when a noun means more than one, it is said to be plural.

Possessive Nouns
Possessive nouns are used to show possession (owning or having).
They are words that would normally be nouns, but are used as adjectives to modify a noun or pronoun.
Possessive nouns tell you who or what the modified noun or pronoun belongs to.
Example: The dog's collar is too large.
The word "dog's" is possessive noun.
It tells you that the noun "collar" belongs to the dog.

Possessive Nouns
Add 's to the end of a singular noun to make it possessive.
Ex: The sky's color is changing . . . sky + 's
Add 's to the end of a plural noun that does not end with an s.
Ex: We enjoyed the children's play ... children + 's
Add only an apostrophe (') to the end of a plural noun that ends with an s.
Ex: My sisters' names are Kate and Nikki . . . sisters + '
