R5 - Homographs

Read the sentence.

Notice how the word rose is used twice in the sentence. Do they have the same meaning?

The first rose means to rise (past form) and the second rose means the part of a plant.

What are homographs?

Homographs are spelled alike, but they have different meanings.

• Homographs can be pronounced the same way, or they may be pronounced differently

• Examples:

• rose - rose (written and pronounced the same way)

• wound - wound (written the same way, but pronounced differently)
