Many minority groups struggled for decades to be treated equally under the law. During the 1960's, African Americans, Mexican Americans and women became increasingly involved in politics. Through legal action and peaceful protests minorities gained many civil rights.

African Americans had to wage their own battle against Jim Crow laws. Under the policy "separate but equal" facilities, African Americans were still forced to attend school separate from white students.

Heman Sweatt

In 1946 Heman Sweatt applied to the University of Texas Law School and was denied. A separate law school for African Americans was created. Sweatt filed a lawsuit against the University.

Sweatt v. Painter

Sweatt argued that he would receive a better education at the white law school. In Sweatt v. Painter, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that segregated facilities in professional schools violated the Constitution.
