The Ironclads of the Confederacy

4

Ironclad Warships

  • The ironclad was a new kind of warship first used in the Civil War.

  • They were protected with an outer armor made of iron. They were much more difficult to sink with cannonballs.

  • The Confederates wanted to nullify the Union’s advantage of naval power with the creation of Ironclad ships.

Confederacy Long term plan

Their strategy was to take advantage of their compact geography, with internal lines of communication, their military heritage and their greater enthusiasm for their cause to wear down the Union will to wage war.

They hoped that their will power would outlast the Union until the Union grew tired and surrendered.

Unions Great Anaconda Plan

9

Anaconda Plan

  • Anaconda plan, military strategy proposed by Union General Winfield Scott early in the American Civil War.

  • The plan called for a naval blockade of the Confederate littoral, a thrust down the Mississippi, and the strangulation of the South by Union land and naval forces.

  • All of these plans happened at the same time! There was no escape!

Unions War Strategy

Like how an Anaconda squeezes and suffocates its prey, the Anaconda plans purpose was to "suffocate" the Confederacy. Cutting off their supplies, the Confederacy would eventually have to surrender in order to survive.
