Six Kingdoms of Life

an overview

Slide image

2

Multiple Choice

Do you remember?

What is taxonomy?

1

The tax you pay each time you buy something.

2

An economy that relies on taxes--the American economy, for example.

3

The branch of science used to classify organisms; a system of classification.

4

An economy where nobody pays taxes.

3

Multiple Choice

Which of the following do scientists NOT use to classify organisms?

1

DNA

2

Whether or not they pay taxes

3

Body structures

4

The development of the embryo into an adult organism.

Question image

Life is made up of many different organisms (living things). Name as many organisms as you can in one minute. Go wild!

5

How many of the organisms that you listed were animals? How many were plants? How many organisms were something else?

Slide image

6

When asked to name organisms,

most people name what they can see---usually plants and animals. But many living things are so small that we cannot see them without a microscope. For example, here are some diatoms and algae living in pond water and magnified thousands of times.

7

Taxonomists

organize all organisms-- big or small--into six kingdoms of life: archaeobacteria, eubacteria, protists, fungi, animals, and plants. Organisms in these kingdoms are made of either prokaryotic or eukaryotic cells.

Slide image

8

Multiple Choice

The six kingdoms of life are...

1

plants, eubacteria, protists, fungi, animals, and archaeobacteria

2

whales, penguins, squid, dolphins, brittle stars, and comb jellies

3

atoms, molecules, cells, tissues, organs, organ systems

4

none of the above

9

Poll

Which kingdom of life are you in?

Archaeobacteria

Fungi

Animal

Protist

None of the above

10

Prokaryotic Cells--" before the nucleus"

  • Simple cells/ no organelles (no nucleus, for example)

  • The oldest organisms on the planet were single cell organisms---each made of one prokaryotic cell

  • Organisms made of prokaryotic cells are relatively small

  • Organisms in the Archaobacteria and Eubacteria kingdoms are made of single, prokaryotic cells.

11

Multiple Choice

Which is true?

1

Prokaryotic cells are usually huge.

2

Trillions of prokaryotic cells joined together to make you.

3

Prokaryotic cells have organelles.

4

Single, prokaryotic cells make up the organisms in the archaeobacteria and eubacteria kingdoms.

Question image

Share the most fascinating things that you have learned about archaeobacteria (Greek for "ancient bacteria". You have three minutes....

14

Eubacteria

  • Like Archaeobacteria, they are single-celled organisms, made of prokaryotic cells

  • Eubacteria comes from Greek and means "true bacteria"

  • Eubacteria typically need oxygen to live

  • They often live in soil, water, or on other organisms

15

Multiple Choice

Question image

Eubacteria are

1

always purple

2

need oxygen to live

3

usually live in extreme environments that are super hot or salty

4

all of the above

5

none of the above

16

Eukaryotic Cells--"true kernel, or nucleus"

are more complex than prokaryotic cells. They contain membrane bound organelles like nuclei, mitochondrion, and ribosomes (and so many more). Organisms in four kingdoms of life are made of eukaryotic cells: protists, fungi, plants, and animals.

17

Be Careful!

It's easy to confuse Eubacteria and Eukaryotic.

Remember: There are Prokaryotic and Eukaryotic CELLS!

Eubacteria are made of Prokaryotic Cells.

Slide image

PROTIST KINGDOM:::::::Single celled organisms made of eukaryotic cells that are not fungi, plants, or animals.

19

Fungus Kingdom

Members of this kingdom are spore-producing organisms who decompose organic matter. Examples include molds, yeast, and mushrooms.

Slide image

20

Animal Kingdom

Animals move with nerves and muscles. They are made of eukaryotic cells and can be as small as an ant, or as large as a blue whale!

Slide image

21

The Plant Kingdom

Plants produce their own food using sunlight, chlorophyll, and carbon dioxide in a process known as photosynthesis.Over time, plants have adapted to many different environments. Watch a plant grow in the next slide.

23

Multiple Choice

Large organisms like sunflowers and elephants are usually made of

1

prokaryotic cells

2

eukaryotic cells

3

both

4

neither

24

Multiple Choice

The first organisms on earth are thought to have been from which kingdom of life?

1

archaeobacteria

2

eubacteria

25

Multiple Choice
