Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau among world leaders writing to pupils in Blaenau Ffestiniog

Pupils from a school in Blaenau Ffestiniog are receiving letters from world leaders from across the globe. The Ysgol y Moelwyn pupils sent Welsh slate1 to leaders of nearly every country in the world in a bid2 to secure heritage status for north Wales quarries. So far, the students have received responses from 15 leaders.

Among those was Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who said he was wowed3 by the slate. In the letter he said he 'loved to receive letters from young people all over the world.'

Other leaders who responded include Prince Albert of Monaco and president of Brazil Michel Terner. Geography teacher Gareth Davies, who is co-ordinating the campaign, said the campaign has instilled4 a sense of pride in pupils for their local area.

“The students are really enjoying this unique experience, and through their love of Geography are really beginning to show the world how proud we all are of our past and how we all care for the future. This adventure we’re on now instills a sense of pride in the young people.”

“Plant! celebrating its 10 years”

The Plant! scheme which is delivered in partnership between Welsh Government, Woodland Trust, Natural Resources Wales (NRW) and ourselves is celebrating its 10thyear with a series of event s that will be held across Wales. Having recently passed the amazing milestone of 300,000 trees planted, there is a lot to celebrate!

To give you some background, this wonderful scheme was set up to ensure that we, as a nation, have trees to enjoy for many years to come and that a close connection between our future generations and the natural environment is nurtured1 from an early age. To achieve this, a tree is planted in new Welsh woodland every time a child is born or adopted in Wales.

Since 2014, a second tree has been planted for every tree planted in Wales. This tree is planted in Mbale, Uganda and ties into2 our 10 Million Trees project. We hope that this helps to create a sense of connection to the wider world and an understanding of our global responsibility.
