What is a Polyhedron?

A 3-Dimensional figure made of flat, polygon-shaped surfaces called faces.

The line segment where 2 faces intersect is called an edge.

The point where several edges meet is called a vertex.

How many faces does the polyhedron in this picture have?

6 around the outside + 2 on each end = 8 total faces.

How many edges? How many vertices?

Edges: 6 on the top, 6 on the bottom, 6 in the middle = 18 total.

Vertices: 6 on the top and 6 on the bottom = 12 total.

Prisms

-A prism is a polyhedron with two congruent, parallel, polygon-shaped bases.

-A prism is named by the shape of its bases.

-The other faces are parallelograms.

Pyramids

-A pyramid is a polyhedron that has 1 base.

-A pyramid is named by the shape of its base.

-Triangular faces join the edges of the base to a point outside the base, which is called a vertex.
