On the next few slides, I will define each word

As well as provide you pictures of what these looks like in different contexts

7

Glossary

A glossary is a small version of a dictionary that you might find in a book

It is in alphabetical order, and lists the word and definition side by side.

A glossary is found at the end of a book.

8

Index

An index lists all of the main subjects in a book. It is very specific!

It tells you WHERE to find that subject, so what page to go to.

An index is found at the end of a book.

9

Table of Contents

A Table of Contents, or ToC, tells you where to find sections, or chapters, in a book.

A ToC is found at the beginning of a book.

These are similar!

However, they have specific purposes.

I'll show you some STAR examples in the next few slides.

11

Teacher Example #1

Okay, I see this is an Index. I'm going to see if I can find a section about Surtsey.

I see the word Surtsey, so that must be it! Okay, now I need to see what pages that topic falls on....pages 130-135, AND 378-379. But, I only see 130-135 as an option, so that must be the answer!

12

Teacher Example #2

This looks like a table fo contents, because it is listing chapters.

I need to find a chapter related to 'Apricot Banana Shakes'.

I see Shakes is on Chapter 3.

It mentions Apricot Banana shakes is on page 18. So, number 2 is the right answer!
