Why do we use it?

Relative clause

To give us important information about the person or thing mentioned. 

Which

We can use which or that to talk about things. That is more common and a bit more informal.

Example:

*This is the material lesson which we are going to learn

*Baseball is a sport which is played using a ball, glove, and bat

Who

We can use who or that to talk about people. That is more common and a bit more informal.

Example:

She's the woman who cuts my hair.

He's the man that I met at the hospital.
